Exploring Northern Gotland

We were very lucky to hit stellar weather while on Gotland – and actually aside from a day here and there the weather on our trip overall has been great…Sunny and warm (maybe mid-70’s during the day and 50’s at night) and light breezes when close to water. No complaints. At the recommendation of our ferry partners we took a road trip up to Fårö, a smaller Baltic Sea island just off north of Gotland proper, connected by a quick car ferry ride. It is actually the second-largest island in the province and it is a popular summer resort.

Fårö

The primary reason we went up to this adjacent island was for the very unusual rock formations on the beach. While one of our first stops was on a beach where other visitors had created their own rock sculptures, we were really there to see the natural and strange formations that were in a class of their own. We pooled our collective imaginations and came up with visions of Richard Nixon, a dinosaur, and a few dozen other potential interpretations of what time and a the seas had carved out of the rocky coast.

Man-made rock piles…
Anyone you know?
My favorite dino
The rock people have landed!

Trouncing around the beached rock monsters worked up an appetite so we got a local recommendation for a very unique creperie. Apparently an ode to old cars and Elvis, this place looked a bit “shabby” but boy, the crepes were awesome.

Which way to Creperie Tati?
Okaaaaay….
Yummmmmm!

We took some lovely backroads home and when we arrived the collective hosts and other related guests had baked up pizzas in the backyard oven – we joined them in devouring a massive platter of fresh strawberries, meringue and ice cream. Great way to end the day.
