Ruthie and her two friends, Megan and Lukas, came along with us to The World of Birds sanctuary in Hout Bay today, and it was a real treat! I cannot imagine that there is anywhere in the US where we could get so up close and personal with so many varieties of birds, with a bunch of monkeys thrown in for good measure. The compound is a maze-like series of wire mesh enclosures that in many places have the birds roaming free with visitors. We got chased by what looked like a prehistoric turkey, ducked under the watchful eye of a huge owl sitting just atop the exit doorframe, and had a blast letting Bolivian monkeys jump on our shoulders and heads! Touristy? Sure. Worth a couple of hours to really get very close to species we might never see eye-to-eye with (literally)? You bet.
