I got more emotional tonight than usual…I was watching CNN and they had the Lynn University students and some family members on. These students were in Port au Prince volunteering last week when the quake hit…they were staying at the Hotel Montana. These students managed to get out but four students and two teachers are still missing in the rubble. The ones missing were in their rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the hotel. That is exactly where the Mona Foundation contingent I was part of stayed just a few months ago. My heart goes out to these families.
I
am so grateful for all the emails I have been receiving from friends asking what they can do to help in Haiti. It renews my faith in the goodness of those I love. Here are some snippets of things happening in our circle of caring:
Two of the amazing people I traveled to Haiti with in October are sponsoring two aid workers who landed in Haiti yesterday. These valiant workers carried with them water, food and blankets and will be trying their best to reach Zunuzi annex (the school for street children) who are now living on the streets.
Contributions are steadily coming in to the Haiti Disaster and Reconstruction Fund, and the first collective check is going to the Red Cross or World Food – which is currently leading the food relief efforts – within the next couple of days, pending a confirmation from aid workers on the ground. We want to be sure that we know who is actually on the front line delivering help.
Mahnaz Javid – President of the Mona Foundation – was interviewed by KIRO TV, a local Seattle station about Haiti and our efforts. Mona staff and volunteers are working extremely hard to process many of the contributions that have been received and the website has been updated with the latest news on Haiti.
I’lll keep you posted.
