Today was – to say the least – interesting. Working at Microsoft, I have gotten used to the ground…priorities…focus…shifting regularly. Agility is key to keeping up. Today was different. I felt like everyone came in fully prepared to have ground shift – in major ways – but approached it with the focus and intensity of purpose wholly on what was needed to be done today. I guess it’s putting one foot in front of the other on the things you can control, and let the rest of the story unfold as it will.
I am appreciative of Microsoft’s leadership for delivering to us clear, concise, and what seems to be very sound reasoning for the business decisions being made in this difficult economic stretch, and appreciate even more the frequently reiterated sentiment that this is hard all around but there will be support for those who are taking the brunt of the squeeze. No way around it – to stay in business and stay competitive – someone has to make tough decisions. And the results of those decisions are not always cheerful outcomes. My greatest hope is that for everyone where a door closes, the ground shifts, someone has made a decision for you, that another door opens with a new opportunity. With the reality in mind that today is not the end but the beginning of probably more difficult transitions, it seems the very best thing we can do is stay focused on what we need to do today…and tomorrow…to work as a very large collective team to think and operate creatively, efficiently, and totally focused on listening to our customers and give them what they tell us they really need and want..and then deliver it.
